‘Light as Noise’ – an exhibition of photographs by Sławomir Płatek at the University of Gdańsk Library
We warmly invite you to Sławomir Płatek’s photography exhibition entitled ‘Light as Noise’. The exhibition will be on display at the UG Library Gallery until 15 August 2026.
Sławomir Płatek’s exhibition “Light as Noise” is a collection of analogue photographs. In these works, light manifests itself in ways rarely perceived by the naked eye. The artist posits that the camera and film extract from reality objects and phenomena whose existence is made possible only through photography. Therefore, an essential element of the exhibition is error – artefacts of the photographic film, the refraction of light in unforeseen ways, excessive grain, blurring, overexposure, light ‘leaking’ through gaps in the camera, and other occurrences captured thanks to the presence of the medium. The method of this collection is transformation, not reproduction, and at times the revelation of the invisible. The material is a co-creator. In this process, the human can utilise phenomena such as asymmetry, vignetting and aerial perspective; select fragments of the visual; choose the moment the shutter is released; and, ultimately, participate in the construction of meaning as a viewer and interpreter.
The artist is a film scholar and PhD student at the University of Gdańsk (art studies), but also a poet; the exhibition features three of his poems thematically linked to the photographs. Beneath each work is its title and a brief technical description.
We invite you to join us for an encounter with art, analogue photography and the extraordinary forms of light’s presence.
Free admission.
